Pontiac, Michigan: Coleman Yoakum

pontiacIt is our pleasure to support the ministry and work of Cole Yoakum and his team at Micah 6 Community, who are serving in an impoverished suburb of Detroit. By faith, Cole moved from Searcy, Arkansas to the metro Detroit area in August of 2011. In his first year there, the Lord opened doors for Cole in many different ministries from pouring his life into high school students in downtown Detroit, to putting on barbecues that fed over 1,000 homeless people each month, to working with the Central Detroit Christian Community Development organization which started several small-businesses in a neighborhood in Detroit to provide jobs and fulfill community needs.

After spending a year learning valuable ministry skills from an array of ministries, Cole was led to begin a ministry called Micah 6 Community. Micah 6 Community is a group of Christ-followers living in the city of Pontiac, Michigan working to bring about Kingdom difference in their city. Pontiac is a city in great need. Cole soon learned that it is a city with as much need as Detroit, but is too far removed to reap the benefits of Detroit’s nonprofit sector. Pontiac has high unemployment, low high school graduation rates, and infant mortality rates that are comparable to a third world country.

With this in mind, Cole and his team have created an intentional community in the heart of Pontiac. They have purchased and renovated two houses and have purchased an acre and a half of vacant lots in which they have planted large scale urban gardens as well as hosting monthly community barbecues to love on the people of Pontiac and form lasting connections with their neighbors. Through these connections they have planted a small church and have started a weekly Bible study to reach out spiritually to the same people they are helping physically. In 2015, they plan to start two small businesses to employ and serve their neighbors in that community including a lawn-care company and Sprout Fresh Food Store, a store that will sell fresh produce year-round.
